Cosmology with the Planck satellite

ISAS 「宇宙科学談話会(第32回)」

講師:   Francois R. Bouchet (Institut D’Astrophysique de Paris)

題目:   Cosmology with the Planck satellite

           Space Science Colloquium

Date:       16:30-17:30, 9th of December (Wed), 2015
Place:      Conference room (Main building 2F)
Speaker:     Francois R. Bouchet (Institut D’Astrophysique de Paris)
Title:       Cosmology with the Planck satellite

Abstract: Sketched out in 1992, selected by ESA in 1996, and launched in
2009, the Planck satellite was shut off in 2013, after a measuring
mission that exceeded all expectations. The Planck collaboration
delivered a first set of cosmological data and results in March 21st
2013, and the full set in February 2015. Part of the data delivery is a
"definitive" map of the anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background
(CMB), its angular power spectrum together with their full statistical
characterisation. The 2015 delivery also includes pioneering
polarisation data. The temperature anisotropy map displays minuscule
variations as a function of the observing direction, of rms ~100microK,
of the fossil radiation around its mean temperature of 2.725K. Other
maps reveal the CMB polarisation. The anisotropies are the imprint of
the primordial fluctuations which initiated the growth of the large
scale structures of the Universe, as transformed by their evolution, in
particular during the first 370 000 years. The polarisation is another
imprint whose theoretical implications can then be confronted with those
derived from the temperature field. I will described the results we
obtained  so far from temperature and polarisation data, both in terms
of content of the universe and of characteristics of the primordial
fluctuations.

Searches and constraints of sterile neutrino dark matter

Prof. Shunsaku Horiuchi (Virginia Tech)
Monday December 22, 11:00 am

Abstract:
The cold dark matter cosmological paradigm has been extremely successful in explaining cosmic structure on large scales. Yet, it has constantly been challenged by observations that probe small-scale structures. I will first introduce these challenges, and discuss how warm dark matter provides an alternative that help resolve such small-scale issues whilst maintaing the successes on large scales. From the particle perspective, I will focus on sterile neutrinos, one of th leading warm dark matter candidates. Finally, anomalous 3.5 keV lines have recently been reported, which may be interpreted as sterile neutrino dark matter decay signals. I will discuss implications of this signal in the context of sterile neutrino cosmology.

James Webb Space Telescope: The First Light Machine

ISAS
       Space Science Seminar
Date: 15:30-16:30, 6th of November (Thu), 2014
Place: Bldg-newA 2F Meeting room A
Speaker: H. Philip Stahl (NASA/MSFC, USA)
Title: James Webb Space Telescope: The First Light Machine

Abstract:
Scheduled to begin its 10 year mission after 2018, the James Webb Space
Telescope (JWST) will search for the first luminous objects of the
Universe to help answer fundamental questions about how the Universe
came to look like it does today. At 6.5 meters in diameter, JWST will
be the world’s largest space telescope. This talk reviews science
objectives for JWST and how they drive the JWST architecture, e.g.
aperture, wavelength range and operating temperature. Additionally, the
talk provides an overview of the JWST primary mirror technology
development and fabrication status.

Recent Planck results and the future of CMB observations

Seminar: ISAS Astrophysical Colloquium
Date: 16:30 - 17:30, Tue the 28th Oct. 2014

Title: Recent Planck results and the future of CMB observations
Speaker: Dr. Jacques Delabrouille (CNRS, Laboratoire APC, Université Paris Diderot)

Abstract: Originally designed essentially as the "ultimate" CMB temperature anisotropy mission, with as a main objective the scientific exploitation of the measurement of the CMB temperature anisotropy power spectrum, the ESA Planck space mission has also provided a number of other results of high scientific interest, both for cosmology and for astrophysical science. In particular, it has recently provided new insights in the understanding of the properties of polarised emission from the galactic interstellar medium, a result of high scientific interest for the interpretation of the detection of B-modes of polarisation at 150 GHz by the BICEP2 experiment. In this seminar, I will review the recent results of the Planck mission and its implications for the future of CMB observations.

Let It Roar: Supermassive Black Holes at the Heart of Galaxies,

2014-10-09
Dr. Yoshiki Matsuoka (NAOJ/Princeton)

ISAS Astrophysics Colloquium at conference

Title: Let It Roar: Supermassive Black Holes at the Heart of Galaxies
Abstoract:
It is now widely accepted that every galaxy with a bulge weighing over
about a billion solar masses hosts a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at
its center. While SMBHs are quiescent most of the time, they are
occasionally awakened from sleep by falling material and start to roar.
Such an activated SMBH is believed to manifest itself as active galactic
nucleus (AGN), an extremely tiny and luminous source found in some
galactic centers. AGNs have long been studied as an important
constituent of the Universe, but on top of that, we are starting to
realize that they might have impacted the evolution of the host galaxies
in an irreparable way. I will start the talk with a general review of
SMBHs, AGNs, and their interrelation with the host galaxies, and then
will focus on one of the hottest topics of the field, AGN-driven
winds/outflows observed in the host galaxies which might be closely
related to the so-called co-evolution of galaxies and SMBHs.

Ultra Fast Outflows (aka UFOs) in AGNs and their impact to Feedback

Abstract:
After reviewing the X-ray evidence of massive, high-velocity outflows in
nearby and distant AGNs/QSOs, I will discuss their relevance for
understanding the formation of AGN winds, as well as estimating the
amount of mechanical feedback released by AGNs into their host
galaxies. I will show some analogies, as well as differences, between
AGN winds and outflows found in galactic BH/NS binaries, and will
briefly list some of the future advancements in this field to be
expected from existing (XMM, Chandra, Suzaku, Nustar), near-future
(Astro-H) and future (Athena) high-energy observatories.

Molceaular Outflow from Centers of galaxies: Resent results

Dr. Kazushi Sakamoto (ASIAA)
*Wednesday*, Jun 18th, 11:00 am
http://www.astro.isas.jaxa.jp/~tsujimot/astro_colloq/

Abstract:
Molecular outflows from nuclei of active galaxies have been known for three decades. They are most easily seen through off-plane molecular gas above (and below) the nuclei of edge-on disk galaxies. Recently a wide variety of galactic molecular outflows have been revealed through developments of new observing
facilities and techniques. At the same time, molecular outflows from galaxies are gaining more attention in the context of galaxy evolution as a step to turn gas-rich blue galaxies to gas poor red ones. I am going to present our recent observations of molecular outflows from galaxy nuclei. They add new flavors to the known galactic molecular outflows, such as twin outflows from binary merger nuclei, a nucleus with
both inflow and outflow, and a highly-collimated bipolar molecular jet that is apparently accelerating along the outflow.

Abstract:

(ISAS seminar) Speaker: Daniel Asmus (Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie, MPIfR, Bonn, Germany) Title: The mid-infrared properties of local active galactic nuclei Abstract: The local active galactic nuclei (AGN) population enables us to study in detail the structures and radiation processes in the direct environment of the supermassive black holes in galaxy centers and to develop an understanding of the general AGN phenomenon. For this purpose, the first unbiased sample of 104 local AGN has now become available thanks to Swift/BAT observations in the hard X-ray regime. We performed high-angular resolution mid-infrared (MIR) imaging observations of most of these AGN with VLT/VISIR and Gemini/Michelle in order to study the dusty tori in these objects -- a key component in AGN models. At the same time, we obtained similar data of a complementary sample of AGN in the low-luminosity regime. I present the results of both programmes and show that unresolved MIR emission is present in the AGN of both samples, which is consistent with thermal emission from dust in the direct vicinity of the AGN. Furthermore, the MIR emission is strongly correlated with the absorption-corrected 2-10 keV X-ray emission over the whole range of luminosities (10^40 to 10^45 erg/s). These results agree with the standard unification model being valid for all types of
