Cosmology and Astrophysics with Galaxy Clusters

ISAS astro seminar

Prof. Daisuke Nagai (Yale)
Thursday December 25, 11:00 am
1134 : Bldg-A 1F Nyusatsu room

Title: Cosmology and Astrophysics with Galaxy Clusters

Abstract:
Galaxy clusters are the most recently formed cosmological objects in
the universe, making them ideal for studying the interplay between
cosmology and baryonic physics in structure formation. Understanding
their formation and growth requires not only an understanding of the
baryonic physics behind gas cooling, star and black hole formation,
and feedback processes, but also the detailed dynamics of how gas
accretes from the cosmic filaments onto the virialization regions in
the outskirts of galaxy clusters throughout their lifetime. Recent
X-ray and microwave observations have revealed detailed thermodynamic
structure of the hot X-ray emitting plasma from their cores to the
virial radii, making comparisons of baryonic component in simulations
to observations a strong cosmological probe. In this talk, I will
review recent advances in our understanding of cluster astrophysics
and discuss future prospects, opportunities and challenges (including
upcoming measurement of turbulent gas motions with ASTRO-H) a for
the use of galaxy clusters as a precision cosmological probe.

Searches and constraints of sterile neutrino dark matter

Prof. Shunsaku Horiuchi (Virginia Tech)
Monday December 22, 11:00 am

Abstract:
The cold dark matter cosmological paradigm has been extremely successful in explaining cosmic structure on large scales. Yet, it has constantly been challenged by observations that probe small-scale structures. I will first introduce these challenges, and discuss how warm dark matter provides an alternative that help resolve such small-scale issues whilst maintaing the successes on large scales. From the particle perspective, I will focus on sterile neutrinos, one of th leading warm dark matter candidates. Finally, anomalous 3.5 keV lines have recently been reported, which may be interpreted as sterile neutrino dark matter decay signals. I will discuss implications of this signal in the context of sterile neutrino cosmology.

The Power of Topology in Superstring Theory

ISAS
       Space Science Colloquium
Date: 16:30-17:30, 5th of November (Wed), 2014
Place: Conference room (Main building 2F)
Speaker: Hiroshi Oguri (Caltech, USA)
Title: The Power of Topology in Superstring Theory

Abstract:
Superstring theory is the leading candidate for the ultimate unified
theory of all the matters and forces in nature. It postulates that
fundamental building blocks are not point particles but strings, and it
is defined in (9+1)-dimensional spacetime. The rich structure in
particle physics in our (3+1) dimensions, such as quark and lepton
flavors, gauge forces, and the Higgs boson to break the gauge symmetry,
is expected to emerge from the geometry of the extra 6 (= 9 - 3)
dimensions, called a Calabi-Yau space. We want to derive quantitative
predictions on our universe from the geometry of the Calabi-Yau space.
However, the Calabi-Yau space is so complicated that we do not even know
an expression for its metric, namely how to measure the distance between
two points on the space. Given this limitation, what can we do? In this
talk, I will describe techniques we have developed to overcome this
difficulty and applications of these techniques to problems in physics
and mathematics.

Exploring the Dark Sector with Euclid and WFIRST-AFTA

ISAS
       Space Science Colloquium
Date: 16:30-17:30, 4th of November (Tue), 2014
Place: Conference room (Main building 2F)
Speaker: Jason Rhodes (NASA/JPL, USA)
Title: Exploring the Dark Sector with Euclid and WFIRST-AFTA

Abstract:
Dark energy, the name given to the cause of the accelerating expansion
of the Universe, is one of the most profound mysteries in modern
science. Current cosmological models hold that dark energy is currently
the dominant component of the Universe, but the exact nature of dark
energy remains poorly understood. There are ambitious ground-based
surveys underway that seek to understand dark energy and NASA is
participating in the development of significantly more ambitious
space-based surveys planned for the next decade. NASA is providing
mission-enabling technology to the European Space Agency‘s (ESA)
Euclid mission in exchange for US scientists to participate in the Euclid
mission. NASA is also developing the Wide Field Infrared Survey
Telescope-Astrophysics Focused Telescope Asset (WFIRST-AFTA) mission for
possible launch in ~2023. WFIRST was the highest ranked space mission in
the Astro2010 Decadal Survey and the AFTA incarnation of the WFIRST
design uses a 2.4m space telescope to go beyond what the Decadal Survey
envisioned for WFIRST. Understanding dark energy is one of the primary
science goals of WFIRST-AFTA. I’ll discuss the status of Euclid and
WFIRST and comment on the complementarity of the two missions. I’ll also
briefly discuss other, exciting science goals for WFIRST, including a
search for exoplanets using both microlensing and a dedicated
coronagraph for exoplanet imaging.

Recent Planck results and the future of CMB observations

Seminar: ISAS Astrophysical Colloquium
Date: 16:30 - 17:30, Tue the 28th Oct. 2014

Title: Recent Planck results and the future of CMB observations
Speaker: Dr. Jacques Delabrouille (CNRS, Laboratoire APC, Université Paris Diderot)

Abstract: Originally designed essentially as the "ultimate" CMB temperature anisotropy mission, with as a main objective the scientific exploitation of the measurement of the CMB temperature anisotropy power spectrum, the ESA Planck space mission has also provided a number of other results of high scientific interest, both for cosmology and for astrophysical science. In particular, it has recently provided new insights in the understanding of the properties of polarised emission from the galactic interstellar medium, a result of high scientific interest for the interpretation of the detection of B-modes of polarisation at 150 GHz by the BICEP2 experiment. In this seminar, I will review the recent results of the Planck mission and its implications for the future of CMB observations.

Let It Roar: Supermassive Black Holes at the Heart of Galaxies,

2014-10-09
Dr. Yoshiki Matsuoka (NAOJ/Princeton)

ISAS Astrophysics Colloquium at conference

Title: Let It Roar: Supermassive Black Holes at the Heart of Galaxies
Abstoract:
It is now widely accepted that every galaxy with a bulge weighing over
about a billion solar masses hosts a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at
its center. While SMBHs are quiescent most of the time, they are
occasionally awakened from sleep by falling material and start to roar.
Such an activated SMBH is believed to manifest itself as active galactic
nucleus (AGN), an extremely tiny and luminous source found in some
galactic centers. AGNs have long been studied as an important
constituent of the Universe, but on top of that, we are starting to
realize that they might have impacted the evolution of the host galaxies
in an irreparable way. I will start the talk with a general review of
SMBHs, AGNs, and their interrelation with the host galaxies, and then
will focus on one of the hottest topics of the field, AGN-driven
winds/outflows observed in the host galaxies which might be closely
related to the so-called co-evolution of galaxies and SMBHs.

http://www.asj.or.jp/nenkai/2014b/T.html

(Bulbul et al. 2014; Boyarsky et al. 2014)。

http://www.asj.or.jp/nenkai/2014b/T.html
